Your words, Lord, are spirit and life.
Today’s verse reminds us that some lines from Scripture appeal to us while others don’t. We find it satisfying to stay with certain lines that attract us. Sometimes a whole gospel scene strikes us and we find it helps us to imagine the scene and to tell Jesus how we are moved by it.
Today, in very few words, Mark gives us two scenes. The first is by the shore of the lake with Jesus speaking to the crowds and calling Matthew. The second shows us Jesus at dinner with sinners and reminding some Pharisees that he has come to call sinners. Without a doubt some aspect of these two simple scenes have appealed to countless people and continue to do so. Lord, help me to read your word with the eyes of my heart.
