‘Will you gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your self in the doing?’

In this passage from Luke, Jesus reminds us about the suffering he has to endure and emphasises that those who want to follow him must likewise lose their life to save it. It’s a confronting challenge: an all or nothing commitment to faith in which the stakes are high.

Perhaps it is a little easier these days to incorporate faith into everyday life, since Jesus is not physically visible in any one place for us to go to follow him. We can find Jesus where and when it suits—although this passage serves as a reminder that while our situation today seems easier than the followers of Jesus’ time, we are still required to make the same commitment to our faith.
