Let us pray that this Lent will help us reproduce in our lives the self-sacrificing love of Christ.
These words introduce the opening prayer for the first Sunday in Lent.
Lent is to be for us a time of special effort to be more Christ-like in all our thinking and loving and doing. This is a big ask, and the experience of past Lents may teach us that unless we deny ourselves some comfort or pleasure, we can forget Lent’s purpose and make no extra effort to be prayerful or charitable or generous.
So, dear Lord, help me through these Lenten days to be more mindful of you and your people, and by your grace to be more insistent in praying, more frequently or daily at Mass, pondering the scriptures and setting aside some money to help the poor.
