The Lord is close to the broken hearted.

St Turibius doesn’t get much of a look-in during Lent, but his is an example worth following. He ministered to the oppressed in Peru and died with his boots on. He took to heart Jesus’ message, taking the Gospel of the immense love of God to the people—and we are called to do the same. The authorities were opposed to Jesus because he stood as ‘a reproof to our way of thinking. His way of life is not like that of others.’

Jesus stood up for and fraternised with the marginalised of Israel and we are called to do the same in our own backyard. So we ask, during Lent especially, who are the marginalised in my own community? Do they live in my street? Are they possibly just next door?
