Paul is reminding us that through the Good News we are saved—if ‘you hold firmly to the message that I proclaim you’—otherwise, ‘you have come to believe in vain’.

The key words are ‘hold firmly’. How firmly am I holding on? Do I go to Mass on Sunday and compromise on other days? Do I declare all I should on my tax return? Do I condone sexual relations outside of marriage? Do I believe that abortion is justified in certain instances? Do I work diligently all the hours for which I am being paid?

To hold firm to my faith means to learn the ways of God and live them fully: then I will be saved.
