One understanding of the church is that it is what we become through fidelity to Christ.

But what is fidelity to Christ? Today’s gospel reading spells it out in words we need to make part of our being as members of his community of faith. ‘Love one another as I have loved you’, Jesus commands. He assures us that this is the way to become his friends. He tells us that the measure of his friendship with us is that he would die for us. And he did.

Jesus also assures us that he has told us everything he has learned from his Father. He is able to give us his assurance because God, his father and ours, is love. This loving intimacy between Jesus and ourselves comes to us as a divine gift. It is the heart of our faith.
