Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord
Luke’s account of pregnant Mary’s hasty visit to Elizabeth brings to mind words of Isaiah: ‘How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the one who brings good tidings, who publishes salvation’ (Isaiah 52:7).
Identifying this visit as ‘a prelude to Jesus’ mission’, Blessed John Paul II writes: ‘In cooperating from the beginning of her motherhood in the Son’s redeeming work, she becomes the model for those in the church who set out to bring Christ’s light and joy to the people of every time and place.’ Recalling the mysteries celebrated in today’s feast, the church prays every day during Vespers Mary’s Magnificat.
With Mary, we pray with a grateful heart: ‘The Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.’
