In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
On Sunday, as we prepared for Mass, discussion turned to the saying: ‘God never gives us more than we can take. How much it had angered one woman to be told that. Her son had been deliberately hit by a car. God had not driven that car, nor told the driver to do so.
We have free will, which is a gift from God. Her faith is also a gift and although she felt battered by what had happened she could say, ‘I am doing better than I thought I would. I have prayed and I know that I have the support of my community and that makes me feel I can cope.
God did not cause this woman’s pain: God helped her carry on. This is very different to saying, ‘God never gives us more than we can take.’
