The people who live in darkness will see a great light.

Who are the people who give me hope? It is rarely the rich and famous, the powerful or the popular. Those who give me hope do not figure in headlines. If in the media at all, they occupy some small column that is easy to overlook. My old mentor is one of them. Age, frailty and constant pain take nothing from his faith, depth of prayer and sense of mission. He prays constantly and offers all he suffers for advocates and carers of the poor and oppressed, for the church and the world.

Dorothy Williams, in Minneapolis, has spoken and written about faith, community building and the ethical use of power for decades. Disability has taken her power of speech but she still writes, and now others speak for her.

Jesus, let me also give hope to others by living out my faith and values.
