Lord, it strikes me that the twelve apostles were a pretty ordinary lot of human beings.

You didn’t go out of your way to choose people of great natural ability, and during the time they spent with you, they didn’t exactly impress. Yet they were the ones you wanted to have around you: fisherfolk, a tax collector, a zealot. We have plenty of opportunity to see how fallible, feeble, fearful and uncomprehending they were, yet you chose them as the basis of your church.

Your choices show us that we too can have a place with you, can belong in your company without dismay. It was the gift of the Spirit after your resurrection that made all the difference to these simple people. May your Spirit also transform us.
