‘I bless you, Father, for hiding these things from the wise and revealing them to children.’
Recent debates between atheists and believers placed an emphasis on the intellectual character of faith. The questions posed by atheists, and some who are anti-theists, have stretched our capacities to ‘reason’ out our arguments. Reason is a necessary companion to faith, and we hold that it is reasonable to believe that our world and we ourselves are more than they seem.
This is reasonable because faith can look at the world and be captured by wonder. And wonder is one of the most instinctive reactions of the human spirit. Our children, free of any rigid intellectualism, are an inspiration to us of what it is to live with wonder. As Gregory of Nyssa observed in the tradition of Jesus: ‘Concepts create idols: only wonder really knows.’
