The Lord gave them bread from heaven.
In the last chapter of John’s gospel, John himself says of the figure they could see on the beach: ‘It is the Lord.’ Another of John’s signs, showing who Jesus is, happens again in this section of his gospel: ‘The Lord gave them bread from heaven.’ The gospel sign announces the true identity of Jesus.
As in Exodus, God is here saving his people, calling them, teaching them how he loves them. Jesus points to the sign he gave and then beyond it. We can look at the ordinary ‘bread’ of our life and try to see where God is active in what is happening around us. It is Jesus operative in our days.
Jesus, open my eyes to see my life as you see it. May it praise and honour you in some small way.
