Jesus wanted space and time to grieve when he heard of the death of John the Baptist.

However, the people pursued him. He took pity on them and healed heir sick. He spoke to them until evening when he worked the large-scale miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, feeding more than five thousand people.

Our Lord’s generosity on this occasion was certainly very great but it was only a foretaste of his later generosity. Down the centuries he has been feeding millions in the Eucharist with his body and blood. Am I as grateful as I should be for the many times he comes to me and makes a gift of himself?
