‘Sir, take pity on me.’

Today’s gospel incident is an endearing one, especially for two reasons: first, the moving gesture of a Canaanite woman kneeling before Jesus, and, second, the memorable interchange between the woman and Jesus in which the woman’s faith and wit win the day. Jesus gives in, granting her request for the cure of her daughter and praising the greatness of her faith.

This unnamed Gentile woman is like the Roman centurion whose faith moved Jesus to cure his servant. They both were and still are examples who lead people to Jesus in whose name all people may trust and hope. Lord, we place our trust in you.
