‘Unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it cannot yield a harvest.’
Lawrence the deacon, the one who serves, is also the martyr, the who serves without stint, gives himself to the limit. We, too, are called to lives of service—in less dramatic ways, perhaps, but nevertheless to be for others more than for self, to find our Lord and Brother in our brothers and sisters.
So, Lord, we take up that prayer of Ignatius: Teach us to be generous; teach us to serve you as you deserve … and as we ponder your word today, make it clear to us how we might find true freedom in giving ourselves, find life in losing our individual lives, and follow you by serving you in others. With Lawrence, let us leave behind a harvest long after the grain of our life is sown in the earth.
