‘My soul magnifies the Lord …’

Let us reflect of the actions of this young woman.

Mary was grace-filled at the annunciation and had no hesitation in agreeing to be mother to Jesus. Her reply was clear and forthright—despite the sense of wonder. The wonder increases as she witnesses the surprises he brings to her life. She ponders on the meaning of the sword piercing her heart, but does not falter. She loves, protects and nurtures him within the family home and in the customs of the temple. She guards him and chides him when he seems to be out of line. She listens to him: ‘I must be about my Father’s business.’ She wonders about these words, but has faith in their portent.

Trust and love grew between them over the years and as he began his public life it was Mary who nudged Jesus to use his love for other people. At Cana, she is strong and clear about the role that he must play. Undoubtedly, she followed him in his ministry and then as he stumbled towards Calvary. Seeing her beneath his cross Jesus passes her into John’s care. She knows that this is right.

Michelangelo’s Pieta exposes Mary’s anguish, but also the fulfilment of her ‘Yes!’ Let us pray that all mothers will reach out to their children with such loving strength.
