‘The last will be first and the first last.’
Jesus calls us to transcend our self-righteousness. Though we may fail, he will continue to call us to this. It is a gospel of hope for us sinners. Though we stumble and fall, he will not abandon us but love us unconditionally. He attacks self-righteousness, reminding us that a place in heaven is not something for which we compete, but rather something which we encourage and support in each other.
Self- righteousness implies that we tell God his business, that we don’t really work for what God wants but for what we want. It means that we are trying to earn God’s love and we become concerned when others seem to be earning more. Father, help us to appreciate your love for us, for then we will feel secure when your love is also given to others.
