‘The greatest among you must be your servant.’

Humility is a bitter pill to swallow. But the call of Christ demands such a response from us. Like Ruth, who gleaned ears of corn from the fields of Boaz, we follow behind Jesus, depending wholly on his mercy.

It is humility that the Lord declares to be the mark of discipleship, and through humility we are promised the favour of God. Let us therefore pray for the grace of humility—or, at least, for the grace of the desire for humility—that we may come, at length, to be true and faithful disciples of Jesus.
