Today you are clearly furious, Lord.

We know that true love sometimes has to say hard things, but your words are searing, cutting words, almost cruel. Yet how else make us see the harm we can do when we are hard-hearted?

You love us enough to tell us the truth about ourselves—that behind the facade of our modem cities there lies corruption and poverty, that behind the proud history of this country there is the story of black suffering, that in our beautiful parks and gardens there sleep the homeless poor, that in our high rise buildings there live the lonely.

You tell us, Lord, that we have the option of repeating past mistakes or of building a better world. Sometimes I wish you weren’t so challenging, but you are, and I know you love me. Help me to meet the challenge today.
