‘Stand ready.’
Augustine lived an immoral life. His mother lived a life of patient, constant, faith. Her simple hope for him led to his radical conversion to an ascetical, God-centred person.
God is a God of surprises, who meets us unexpectedly. Who can tell when or how God will come into our lives? Being a Christian can be frustrating and we can forget the demands of the Gospel and behave in a less than beautiful way. God is always calling us, but he seeks us perhaps especially when we are being unfaithful. We need the example of people such as Monica about us to inspire our faithfulness. They show us that the world is a blessed place and they call forth holiness in ourselves.
Jesus, help me see the face of Monica in the world to guide my heart to the Father.
